“The Kiss,” by Gustav Klimt, is one of the greatest examples of romanticism in art. The picture is an archetype of love: just two people, a man and a woman in the moment before a kiss. The artist skillfully depicted the moment of confluence of two universal principles, male and female. He conveyed the feeling of a separate microcosm beyond time and space. In one version the artist actually showed himself in the picture with his beloved Emilie Flöge, who was his only muse during his whole life. Klimt achieved a unique fusion effect in the picture with real gold leaf, representing wealth and significance. The gold on the payment card brings out this effect.
