The image of a DNA molecule is considered a universal symbol of perpetual life and development. DNA’s spiral shape is reminiscent of a great variety of natural objects and phenomena: mollusc shells, the concentric rings of trees, whirlpools, and tornadoes. The macromolecule’s double helix mysteriously connects to humanity’s most ancient symbols, combining a circular shape and the momentum of movement: the caduceus, a rod entwined with serpents; or the Chinese model of the union of opposites in yin and yang.
