For nomadic peoples, a carpet symbolizes the home. The pattern of a carpet can be bright and coarse, or fine and cadenced, but any real carpet constitutes an abstract picture with its own internal harmony. Each handcrafted rug is unique. Often its maker leaves one imperfect detail in the pattern, as if putting a signature on the product. With the help of carpets, the memory of humankind has preserved the ancient names of cities and kingdoms. For example, a Persian carpet, that “character” of tales and legends, is still called Persian, despite the fact that since 1935, Persia has been called Iran.
