The helmet served the warrior not only as protection in battle: It demonstrated the samurai’s social status, his strength, and his power. The card is a stylized image of a suji bachi helmet, a true masterpiece of the blacksmith’s art from the Edo Period. The upper part of the card shows the shikoro, a “skirt” of metal plates joined together by silk cords, which shields a samurai’s neck. At the center of the design is the kuwagata, a pair of horns that can soften the impact of a weapon, and a dragon to frighten the enemy. The fukigaeshi, large flaps on the helmet protecting the face from lateral sword strikes, are decorated with dragonflies on a lattice of golden foliage. By tradition, a samurai donned his helmet at the last minute before a battle or a celebration.
